This painting depicts Maria Burgess and her mokopuna at the 2024 hikoi (march) protesting the introduction of the Treaty Principles Bill into Parliament. Maria is affiliated to Ngāti Manawa and gew up in Murupara. She has lived in Napier for a number of years and has worked for NZ Corrections for 20 years. She is highly respected for her work with Māori. The painting is intended to capture the spirit of intergenerational change and familial connection (whānaungatanga).
